Microsoft has officially announced the retirement of its standalone SharePoint Online (SPO) Plan 1 & Plan 2 and OneDrive for Business (ODB) Plan 1 & Plan 2 subscriptions. Sales will end in June 2026, and the services will be fully retired by December 2029.
This change forms part of Microsoft’s strategic shift to simplify its cloud ecosystem and guide organisations toward integrated Microsoft 365 productivity suites. According to industry reports, Microsoft shared this update with partners as part of an evolution of its cloud storage and collaboration offerings.
What’s Changing?
Microsoft is retiring the following standalone plans:
- SharePoint Online Plan 1
- SharePoint Online Plan 2
- OneDrive for Business Plan 1
- OneDrive for Business Plan 2
Key dates:
- June 2026: Standalone plan sales ends effective 01.06.2026
- Jan 2027: End of Life - No renewals effective 01.01.2027
- December 2029: Services fully retired, with all customers expected to have transitioned to Microsoft 365 suites or alternative solutions
Microsoft is encouraging customers to adopt Microsoft 365 bundles, which combine SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Exchange, security, and productivity tools in a single integrated licence.
What this means?
If your organisation currently uses standalone SPO or ODB plans — or is considering migrating to SharePoint soon — this announcement has important implications.
1. Existing Clients on Standalone Plans Must Transition
Clients relying on standalone SharePoint or OneDrive licences will need to move to a Microsoft 365 plan before December 2029. The transition doesn’t need to happen immediately, but planning early ensures:
- No disruption to service
- Cost predictability
- License optimization
- Alignment with long-term digital workplace strategy
2. Migrating to Microsoft 365 Opens Opportunities
Although standalone plans are retiring, Microsoft 365 offers significant advantages:
- Enhanced security & compliance features
- Integrated Teams collaboration
- Advanced sharing, governance, and lifecycle management
- AI-powered workflows and search
- Unified administration & simplified monitoring
Many of our clients already benefit from these capabilities — this transition presents an opportunity to modernise your environment further.
3. Licensing May Become Simpler and More Cost-Effective
With standalone SPO and ODB plans being phased out, Microsoft 365 plans become not just necessary but often more cost-efficient when considering bundled capabilities and reduced administrative overhead.
What this means for Organizations planning to migrate to SharePoint?
If you’re preparing a SharePoint migration — whether from file shares, on‑premises servers, Google Workspace, or legacy systems — this update impacts your licensing strategy.
1. Your Migration Path Should Be Rolled Into Microsoft 365
New organisations should adopt a Microsoft 365 plan rather than standalone SharePoint Online. This gives:
- More predictable long-term costs
- A future‑proofed platform aligned with Microsoft’s roadmap
- Access to Teams, Power Automate, Purview, and Exchange Online if needed
- Better scalability for document management and intranet builds
2. Information Architecture & Governance Can Improve
Using Microsoft 365 as the foundation means you can take advantage of:
- Sensitivity labels
- Retention policies
- Lifecycle automation
- Centralized access control
- Unified content security
These features were limited or unavailable in standalone plans.
3. A Modern Digital Workplace by Default
SharePoint is no longer just a storage-and-sites tool. In Microsoft 365, it powers:
- Teams collaboration spaces
- Viva Connections & employee experience hubs
- Modern intranet solutions
- Secure external sharing
- Integrated workflows and automation
Migrating into the full ecosystem sets your organization up for long-term success.
